- preoccupation with fears of having serious disease
- obsessive preoccupation persists despite medical evaluation and reassurance
- not a delusion

- 1+ deficits affecting motor/sensory function
- deficits preceded by trigger/stressor
- not intentionally produced
- impacts functioning, but not concerned about it
faking illness:
- pretending to be sick
- usually done to avoid responsibility
malingering
faking illness:
- inflict injury or illness or aggravate existing condition
- fulfills an emotional need
factitious disorder
reinforcement: direct benefit from illness that results in decreased anxiety
primary gain
reinforcement: advantage of fulfilling sick role
secondary gain
Tx for all somatic disorders
- acknowledge symptoms
- encourage expression of feelings
- treat comorbid diagnoses
- focus pt attention away from self
- anxiety reducing techniques
