What is somatization?
expression of stress through physical symptoms
what are the related disorders to somatic symptoms?
somatic symptom disorder

who is at risk for somatic disorder?
females
age 16-25
individuals with lower level of education
what is the etiology of somatic symptom disorder?
psychological (personality, co-occuring psych, trauma, repression to conflict), neurobiological, behavioral (familial influence or mimicing, lack of attention, financial benefit)
How is someone diagnosed with somatic symptom disorder?
-1 or more symptom
-excessive thoughts
-consistent for more than 6 months

what is illness anxiety disorder?
commonly known as a hypochondriac. constantly thinks something is very wrong for at least 6 months
either care seeking or care avoidant
What is conversion disorder?
when someone loses a physiological ability with no medical condition
(Never Have I Ever)
often associated with labelle’ indifference where they are not in distress
what is factitious disorder?
can either be imposed on self or others, which is where they induce injury or disease to decieve
(munchhousens?)
What is malingering?
CONSCIOUSLY faking an illness or exaggerating symptoms in order to have a secondary gain
what is body dysmorphic disorder?
preoccupation with an imagined defect in appearance
what is primary gain?
a benefit that involves only the self. Such as relief from anxiety or depression
What is secondary gain?
benefit from an outside source, such as relief from responsibilities with work or money
