Solvents Flashcards
1
Q
What do organic solvents do?
A
Dissolve membranes, disrupting cells
2
Q
What happens when the membrane is disrupted?
A
It becomes more fluid and more permeable
3
Q
Structure of solvents
A
The non-polar tails of the phospholipids are orientated away from the water forming s bilayer with a hydrophobic core. The charge phosphate heads interact with water, help in finding keep the bilayer intact
