Diffusion Flashcards
What type of process is if?
Passive- no energy is needed for it to happen
What molecules can fit through spaces between phospholipids?
Oxygen and carbon dioxide
Water is small enough so it’s able to diffuse across a plasma membrane by osmosis
How does the concentration gradient effect the rate of diffusion?
The higher it is the faster the rate
How does the thickness of the exchange surface affect the rate of diffusion?
The thinner the exchange surface the shifter the distance the particles have to travel
How does the surface area affect the rate of diffusion
The larger the surface area the faster the rate of diffusion
How does the temperature affect the rate of diffusion?
The higher the temperature the faster the rate because the particles have more mi Eric energy so can move faster
What is diffusion?
The net movement of particles from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration
This continues until particles are evenly distributed throughout the liquid or gas
Particles diffuse down a concentration gradient
