Solutions & Suspensions (lecture 3) Flashcards
1
Q
Solutions
A
Most rapid absorption of oral dosage forms
2
Q
• Suspensions
A
Solid particles suspended in a liquid
Liquid has dissolved drug plus excipients such as surfactants which are also suspending agents
Still require dissolution even though a liquid dosage form. Formulation considerations include particle size, viscosity, and wetting agents.
“Shake Well”
3
Q
Limitations/challenges
A
Liquid dosage forms have limitations
Poor water solubility of drug
Poor chemical stability
– Most common degradation is hydrolysis of organic acid derivatives.
Sterility requirements Compatibility with biological fluids
