Hard Gelatin Capsules
– Locking cap and body containing the drug substance.
– Alternative to tablets, easier to swallow, and can be used
to deliver powders, granules, beads, and liquids.

- thy can be sued for blinding studies
disadvantages of hard gelatin
- capsule filling in slow compared to tableting
- stability could be a problem
- there are concerns related to bovine spongiform encephalopathy
Soft gelatin capsules
Soft Gelatin Capsules
- Has higher plasticizer content (softness and flexibility).
- Can be used to improve bioavailability, since a suspension or solution can be encapsulated inside
- High patient compliance & tamper evident properties.
Hard gelatin
•Hard gelatin
- The Body vs the cap
- Ridges and dimples for mechanical interlocking between the body and the cap
Soft gelatin
Soft gelatin
used for liquicaps containing a liquid formulation or semisolid One-unit capsules
Hermetically sealed (not sealed by mechanical interlocking) Has water content
Opacifier
Has plasticizer (glycerin or sorbitol)
