colligative property
A colligative property is a property which depends only on the number of particles and is independent of the size and nature of the particles in the solution.
Relative lowering of vapor pressure
The relative lowering of vapor pressure is defined as the difference in vapor pressure of the pure solvent and the solution divided by the vapor pressure of the pure solvent.
Relative lowering of vapor pressure=P-P’/P
where,
P=vapor pressure of pure solvent at a certain temperature
P’= vapor pressure of a solution of a substance in the same solvent at the same temperature
F.M Raoult’s
The relative lowering of vapor pressure of a given solvent by non-volatile solute is equal to the mole fraction of the solute in solution
Elevation of boiling point
Since the vapor pressure of the solution is lower than that of pure solvent it followed that the solution must be heated at a higher temperature than the pure solvent to become equal to the atmospheric pressure .i.e. the boiling point of the solution is higher than that of pure solvent.
Raoult’s law of elevation of boiling point
The elevation of boiling point of the solution is proportional to the concentration (molality) of the dissolved substance.
colligative properties of Raoult’s law of boiling point
Equimolecular quantities of different substances dissolved in the same quantity of a particular solvent raise the boiling point to the same extent.
