botany Flashcards
study materials for test 2
Importance of bacteria
- Help to make interesting food(buttermilk, cheese, yoghurt, picklez, sauerkraut, etc)
2.decompose organic matters(recycle nutrients from dead organisms, break down sewage into simpler compounds) - Nitrogen fixation(changes nitrogen into gas, N2 to ammonia NH3 so plants can make amino acids)
- Human health(bacteria on skin help prevent infection, bacteria in gut help digestion and make vitamins)
5.Biotechnology(used to make antibiotics, insulin, vitamins, human growth hormones and other drugs)
Importance of algae
Algae population both in fresh water and marine conditions is important in many ways.
Algae maintains a proper balance of O2 and CO2.Being photosynthetic, algae use up CO2 in the presence of sunlight and release O2 during their respiration. Algae themselves need O2 but the rate of photosynthesis is much greater than the rate of respiration so enough O2 is left for the use of other animals. Oxygen encourages the growth of aerobic bacteria but check and growth of pathogenic bacteria. Thus it is important for the town water supply. By producing oxygen, it purify water for continued living of fish and other aquatic animals.
Beneficial effects of yeast
Yeast, Saccharomycus cerevisae, is used to ferment sugar to alcohol and CO2.
It is used in making beer and wine and also to make the bread rise.
(2) It is used to synthesize vitamin B and C and also Vitamin D by using UV rays.
(3)(HBV)Vaccine for Hepatitis B , alpha and gamma interfere (treatment for cancer and vital infections) are obtained from saccharomycus cerevisae.
(4) Ephedrine is extracted by the yeast from the benzaldehyde. It is used in the treatment of nasal troubles and asthma.
(5) Yeast is utilized in medicine as a source of enzymes. It is the model organism in genetics and genetherapy.
(6)Yeast protect and clean the environment by bioremediation, pollution clean up, and waste recycling.
