Solutions and solubilities Flashcards
- What is a solute?
2. What is the solvent?
- Substance that is dissolved in the solvent
2. Dissolves the solvent (liquid part of solution)
What forms when you cool a solution or let it sit for a long time?
Precipitate
What is a precipitate?
A solid that comes back out of its solution due to a chemical reaction
Why does the solute dissolve in a solvent?
Solvent molecules “attack” the solute and pull it apart
What does concentration describe?
How much solute is present compared to the amount of solvent
What does it mean when you say a solution is concentrated? Diluted?
Concentrated: a lot of solute
Diluted: little solute
What is solubility?
A measure of how well a solute dissolves in a solvent at a given temperature
What’s the difference between unsaturated, saturated, and supersaturated solutions?
Unsaturated: more solute can be dissolved
Saturated: maximum amount of solute is dissolved
Supersaturated: too much solute tried to be dissolved
What are three factors that affect solubility?
- Temperature
- (size of solute molecule or attraction to solute/solvent)
- Pressure
What factors affect the rate of solution?
- Size
- Stirring
- Amount of solute
- Temperature
