Solutions Flashcards
What is a solution?
A molecularly disperse. homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances in ONE phase.
How many components does a binary solution have?
2
What are the 2 types of components of a solution?
The solvent and the solute
What is a solvent?
The major component
What is a solute?
The minor component(s)
What is a solution with 3 components?
Ternary solution
What is a solution with 4 components?
Quaternary solution
What are the 3 phases a solution can have?
Liquid. solid and gas
What is an aqueous solution?
A solution where the solvent is water.
Dilute vs. Concentrated?
Dilute = Small amount of solute in solvent Concentrated = Big amount of solute in solvent
Unsaturated vs. Saturated?
Unsaturated = When all the components still blend in 1 phase Saturated = When we can clearly see 2 different phases
What is supersaturated?
When the solution is no longer stable and crystals form from cooling down the solution
Miscible vs. Immiscible liquids?
Miscible = When the liquids can mix Immiscible = When the liquids can not mix
