Alternative communication systems,
Communication intended to compliment or replace speech issues.
Aims
Aim to improve functional communication; such “functional” communication usually develops in child’s first year using gestures and words and sentences.
Communication severely impaired in ASD.
Process
Shown an object, then shown a picture of the object - reinforcement/connectivity.
Encouraged to pick up the object and build up communication patter/objects.
Charlop-Christy
Findings support claims of PECS.
However, only researched 3 participants so its unclear is if its generalizable.
PECS is easy to use.
Flippin
Meta-analysis, limited support - PEC is fairly effective.
No evidence that the effects of PECs are maintained.
The association with an object the child likes makes it more likely to successful.
Offers prospect and improvement - less stress.
Issues
Resources can be expensive.
Lacks research support - questions justification for expenditure.
Successful training could lead to jobs - financial benefits.
