Solution 1) Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) Flashcards
Aims
Develop dynamic intelligence of children with ASD in emotional referencing, social co-ordination, declarative language, flexible thinking, relational information processing, foresight and hindsight.
Process
Trained RDI consultant works with family, meeting once or twice a week to establish aims, plan activities and evaluate progress in terms of 6 objectives. Parents video some of their ever day interaction with child for consultant to access. At later point, child is paired with other children during RDI. Progress is monitored and family’s interactions are assessed every 6-12 months.
Gutstein

RDI can reduce ASD symptoms, but its not a cure.
Expensive - can last 3 years.
Bayat et al.
Findings indicate positive interaction within family is central in treatment.
Provide limited and indirect support for fundamental concept of RDI.
Showing concepts are valid doesn’t mean treatments are valid.
Evidence
Lacks evidence - 25 years, very few studies.
No evidence that RBI is effective.
However, many have found it effective.
Zane et al.

There was an increase of ASD diagnosis - increasing treatments.
Wastes financial resources.
Other , more beneficial treatments ignored.
