Individual 2) Central Coherence Deficit Flashcards
Central Coherence
Frith - refers to ability to integrate fine details into an overall pattern, to understand how elements come together in a meaningful way.
Deficit
ASD people are less likely to pay attention to the broader context of something and focus on smaller details instead.
Happe and Frith
Central coherence is a cognitive style or preference for one form of processing over another.
Exists on a continuum.
Positive Explanation of ASD
Recognises that people with ASD have superior abilities in local processing.
Weak central coherence seen as a preference for local processing rather than a deficit
Shah and Frith
Evidence increases validity.
Supports key prediction of theory that people with ASDD will show inferior performance on tasks requiring a grasp of the gist, but will perform better on tasks needing attention to detail.
