Solution 2 Flashcards

Q

NMW BK

A

The National minimum wage is a compulsory minimum wage that employers need to pay employees aged 21 and over. Raising the minimum wage would help not only to narrow the gender wage gap, but also reduces gender and racial differences in wealth (BK)

° It would play an important role in reducing gender inequality by targeting wealth differentials that disproportionately affects women.

Q

NMW Source 5

A

° “Women are disproportionately in low paid work compared to men so in the absence of rationing effects on their employment, then they should benefit most from minimum wage policies.”

°this shows with more money to take home, women who are employed will be better off. It also ensures single mothers, and women who are financially struggling, will have a chance to be lifted out of poverty.

Q

NMW Source 6

A

° A source that proves this is effective states that “The NMW has been incredibly effective in raising minimum wage levels to closer to average earnings without having any detrimental impact.

° This shows that that if we continue raising the NMW, a lot can be done to get women on equal levels, giving then equal opportunities.

A

On the other hand, Increasing the National Living Wage might not be the best approach to tackling gender inequality against women. It could have an effect, but not a big enough effect for or to make a change. Although the NLW has increased earnings for the lowest paid workers, this has not been enough to safeguard against poverty.

Q

Against NMW Source 7

A

° “64% of working-age adults in poverty live in a household where at least one adult is in work, and women, who are more likely to earn below loving wage, are also more likely to be in poverty.”

° This shows that women are still on the bottom rung of the ladder when it comes to wages. Increasing the National minimum wage wouldn’t work because they would still end up in relative poverty. Although the NLW has increased,

Although the NLW has increased, in absolute terms, it hasn’t done much for poverty, hence it won’t do much for women.(BK)

Q

Against NMW pt2.

A

Raising the National minimum wage can help reduce income inequality for low wage workers, but evidence suggests it may not fully address gender inequality due to several underlying factors in the workforce. Research suggests that gender inequality extends beyond low wages, and includes other factors such as gender segregation of jobs, with women more likely to be employed in lower paying, part time or flexible roles often chosen to balance unpaid caregiving responsibilities.

Q

Against NMW source 8

A

° “Modest minimum wage increases have not kept pace with the rising cost of basic necessities for working families (source 8).”

° This means that increasing the NMW may only have a limited effect on reducing the overall gender pay gap.
