Solubility Equilibrium Flashcards
1
Q
Calculating the molar solubility
A
- Write out the equation and set up an ICE box
- if no initials are given then they are 0
- add x to the products and solve for x
2
Q
The effect of pH on Solubility
A
the solubility of an ionic compound with a strongly basic or weakly basic anion increases with increasing acidity (increase pH)
3
Q
When Q < Ksp
A
the solution is unsaturated and more of the solid ionic compound can dissolve in the solution
4
Q
When Q > Ksp
A
the solution is super saturated under most circumstances, the excess solid precipitates out of a super saturated solution
5
Q
Q = Ksp
A
the solution is saturated. The solution is holding the equilibrium amount of the dissolved ions and additional solid does not dissolve in the solution
