Solubility Curves and Solutions Flashcards
How close together are particles in a solid?
Very close
How close together are particles in a gas?
Far apart
How close together are particles in a liquid?
Just about touching
How are particles arranged in a solid?
Fixed lattice
How are particles arranged in a gas?
Random
How are particles arranged in a liquid?
Random
How do particles move in a solid?
Vibrate
How do particles move in a liquid?
Free to move
How do particles move in a gas?
Drift around
What is the process of a gas turning into liquid called?
Condensation
What is the process of a solid turning into liquid called?
Melting
If both products in a reaction are soluble, what reaction takes place?
None
What is the process of a solid turning into a gas called?
Sublimation
Boiling
Occurs when all molecules in a liquid can overcome forces of attraction and change into gas, occurs at boiling point
Evaporation
When molecules at surface have enough energy to escape from liquid to gas

Soluble
Solution
The mixture that forms when a solute dissolves in a solvent
Solvent
The liquid in which the solute dissolves
Solute
The solid/liquid/gas that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution
Saturated Solution
A solution containing the maximum amount of dissolved solute
Solubility
The maximum massof solute in grams that dissolves in 100g of solvent
What is the effect of impurities on melting and boiling point?
Impurities lowers the melting point and increase the boiling point.
How does temperature affect solubility?
The solubility of most solid solutes increases as temperature increases
How do precipitates form?
Precipitation reactions occur when a soluble and insoluble products combine to form an ionic solid called a precipitate
What is the boiling point of pure water?
100 degrees celcius
What is the boiling point of salt water?
102 degrees celcius
Why is salt put on icy roads?
Using road salt is a means of freezing point depression, which means that road salt can lower the freezing temperature of the water.
