Solubility, Balancing and Ions Flashcards
Reactants
Reactants are ionic compounds that react with each other “raw materials”
Products
The results of a chemical reaction between reactants
Chemical Equation
Describes what happens during a chemical reaction
Calcium Carbonate +
Sulfuric Acid =
Calcium Sulphate +
Carbon Dioxide gas +
water
Soluble
Dissolves to form a clear substance sugar in water
Insoluble
Two substances mixed do not dissolve leave a product know on a precipitate
Solubility Table
Tells us which ions can or cannot mix. They are either soluble or insoluble
Ionic Compound
Cation + Anion
E.g. Sodium ion + Chloride ion
The “old switcheroo”
Balancing ionic compounds method. Refer class notes.
Atomic Number
Number of protons and electrons in an element
Electron configuration
Arrangement of electrons in shells (onion skins)
Balanced equation
Both sides of see-saw have same number of atoms of each element both sides
Ion
An atom that has either gained or lost electrons e.g. Na+ means sodium has lost and electron
Cation
A positive ion
E.g. Na+,Mg2+
Anion
A negative ion
e.g. CI-,l-
Monatomic ion
Only one element in ion e.g. K+
