Periodic Table Groups Flashcards
Alkaline earth metals
2 electrons outermost shell. Groups 2, reactive but slower than group 1, less heat produced
lanthanides
group does not fit typical periodic table type, metals are silvery white, tarnish on contact with air.
eg. lanthanum
actinides
only thorium and uranium exist naturally on earth. radioactive- unstable nucleus in atom.
transition metals
hard but maileable, shiny, good conductivicty.
examples: gold (AU), silver (AG), iron (FE)
post transition metals
moving towards non-metal world- softer, conduct poorly, below the “staircase”.
metalloids
form the “staircase”. moving to non-metals, sei conductors, poor metals.
non-metals
above the “staircase” reactive with metals
halogens
group 7, chemically reactive pair up with Alkali metals to make salts (sodium and chlorine)
Noble gases
inert gases, group 8. colourless, odourless, non-reactive by nature calming effect eg. lightbulbs or storing an alkaline metal.
