Solubility Flashcards
What is a solvent?
The liquid in which the solute dissolves
What is a solute?
A soluble substance which dissolves
What is a solution?
A mixture of a solute dissolved in a solvent
What is a saturated solution?
A solution in which no more solid will dissolve at a particular temperature
Salt + water =
Salty water
What is solubility?
A mass of solid that will saturate 100g of water at a particular temperature.
Units = g/100g water
List the 4 factors effecting solubility
Temperature
Stirring
Volume of solvent
Mass of solute
What is the formula for working out solubility?
Solubility (g/100g of water) = mass of solute/mass of solvent x 100
What is the effect of temperature on the solubility on solids?
Solubility increases with increase in temperature
What is the effect of temperature on the solubility of gases?
Solubility decreases with increase in temperature
