Bonding Flashcards
What is a cation?
A positive ion
What is an anion?
A negative ion
What is a molecular ion?
A charged particle containing two or more atoms covalently bonded.
What is a covalent bond?
A shared pair of electrons.
What does a molecule contain?
Two or more atoms covalently bonded
What does diatomic mean?
There are two atoms covalently bonded in the molecule
Covalent bonding occurs between two ——— which share ——— of electrons from their ———— shells
Non-metal

Why does sodium not bond covalently with chlorine?
Covalent bonding occurs between atoms that need to share pairs of electrons in order to gain full outer shells. Eg. When 2 non metals bond.
Sodium is a metal and donates an electron to gain full outer shell. It forms a cation (Na+) and will bond ironically with chloride which has gained donated electrons.
What is metallic bonding?
The attraction between between delocalised electrons and the positive ions in a regular lattice.
What is an ion?
A charged particle
Chlorine is in Group 7. What charge would a chloride ion have?
-
Covalent bonding happens between which type of atoms?
Non-metal atoms
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms covalently bonded.
