Q

Why does sodium not bond covalently with chlorine?

A

Covalent bonding occurs between atoms that need to share pairs of electrons in order to gain full outer shells. Eg. When 2 non metals bond.
Sodium is a metal and donates an electron to gain full outer shell. It forms a cation (Na+) and will bond ironically with chloride which has gained donated electrons.
