Solubility Flashcards
Solution
A liquid mixture in which the minor component (the solute) is uniformly distributed within the major component (the solvent)
Solvent
Able to dissolve other substances
Solute
The minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.
Sediment
Matter that settles to the bottom of a liquid
What makes a solution unsaturated?
Solution that contains less than the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolved. Rate of dissolving is faster than rate of crystalization
What makes a solution saturated?
A solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolved.
What makes a solution super saturated?
When it contains more than the maximum amount of solute that is capable of being dissolved at a given temperature. Rate of crystalization is faster than rate of dissolving.
Describe factors which affect saturation point and rate of crystallization:
The rate of crystallization depends on the concentration of the solute at the crystal surface. Supersaturated = more crystalization
Filtrate
A liquid which has passed through a filter
Percipitate
Cause (a substance) to be deposited in solid form from a solution.
Homogenous
Consistent, uniform composition - most ones are made up of a solvent and soulte and are a solution.
Heterogeneous
Components are visible and easily seperated - added substances will not dissolve
Aqueous solution
Water is solvent
What is said to be the state of the equililibrium?
Saturated Solution - rate of dissociation and rate of crystalization is equal
Solubility
Amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solute at a given temperature.
