covalent bonds Flashcards
Covalent bonds
form between atoms with similar electronegativity
electrons are attracted to atoms equally and are shared between the two, forming a molecule
electrostatic force
force between the electrons and protons in each nucleus
single covalent bond
when atoms share 1 pair of electrons
Lewis structure - covalent bonds
determine the total number of valence electrons
arrange elements
fill in electrons, start with bonds first then add lone pairs
if not enough electrons to fill all octets create double or triple bonds
double covalent bond
when atoms share 2 pairs of electrons
triple covalent bond
when atoms share 3 pairs of electrons
