Solubility Flashcards
Solubility
Solubility is a fundamental concept in chemistry and it refers to the ability of a substance known as the solute, to form a solution with another substance, the solvent
Solubility equilibrium
The extent of the solubility of a substance in a specific solvent is generally measured as the concentration of the solute in a saturated solution, one in which no more solute can be dissolved. At this point the two substances are said to be at solubility equilibrium
Factors affecting solubility
1) Temperature: solubility increases with temperature for solids and liquids, however gases solubility decreases with an increase in temperature
2) pressure: increasing pressure increases solubility
3) nature of solute and solvent: the nature of solute and solvent also affects solubility, for instance, polar solvents tend to dissolve best in polar solvents while non - polar solutes tend to dissolve best in non - polar solvents, this principle is often referred to as “ like dissolves like”
What is a solution
A solution is homogeneous mixture of substances, meaning that it’s composition and particle are consistent through out
What is a solute
A solute is a substance that is dissolved in in a solvent to produce a solution.
What is a solvent
A solvent is a substance that dissolves a solute in order to produce a solution
What is solubility
Solubility is the amount of solute in gram or mole that dissolves in a specific volume of solvent to form a saturated solution
What is saturated solution
It is a solution that that maximum amount of solute has been dissolved in a solvent at a particular temperature, pressure at which no more solute can be added in those conditions
