Solis In Western Region Flashcards
Why may soils vary
Differances in relief, drainage and climate generally poor quality
What are peat soils
Exist Upland areas mayo and Galway, forming expanses of shallow Blacket bogs there infertile often waterlogged making them unproductive
What are podzols
Result of heavy rainfall and leaching, as heavy rain falls, minerals in the soil are washed from A horizon to B horizon the minerals form an impermeable hard pan between horizons leads to poor drainage
What are grey soils
Form as result of severe saturation of clay soils due to form of hardpans. Water fills pores in soil, removing all air
What are brown earth’s
Limited to parts of South Galway and other low-lying areas in Western region. Normally fertile+well drained, making them valuable for agriculture
