Solids, liquids and gases Flashcards
What are the 3 states of matter?
Solids, liquids and gases.
Whatever state you get depends on how strongly the particles stick together. What are the 3 things which depend on how well they stick together?
a) The material
b) The temperature
c) The pressure
What is a property?
A property of a substance is a way of saying how it behaves. We use the properties of things to help us identify if it is a solid, liquid or gas.
What are the 5 key properties to help you identify if the object is a solid, liquid or gas?
1) Volume
2) Shape
3) Density
4) Compressibility
5) Ease of flow
What does volume mean?
It means how much space something takes up.
What does density mean?
This is how heavy something is for its size.
What does compressibility mean?
This is how much you can squash something.
Do each of the following have a volume:
a) solid
b) liquid
c) gas
a) solid=has a definite volume
b) liquid=has a definite volume
c) gas=has no volume ( they always fill up the container they are in.)
Do each of the following have a shape:
a) solid
b) liquid
c) gas
a) solid=definite shape
b) liquids=liquids match the shape of container
c) gas=gases become the same shape as the container
How much is the density of each of the following:
a) solid
b) liquid
c) gas
a) solid=high density (they are heavy for their size
b) liquid=medium density
c) gas=low density (they are light for their size)
Can each of the following be easily compressed:
a) solid
b) liquid
c) gas
a) solid=not easily compressed
b) liquid=not easily compressed
c) gas=easily compressed
Can each of the following flow:
a) solid
b) liquid
c) gas
a) solid=dont flow
b) liquid=flow easily
c) gas=flow easily
What are all materials made of?
All material are made of tiny particles.
