Physical Changes Flashcards
What is it called when a material changes from one state of matter to another?
This is called a physical change.
What are the 5 main types of physical changes?
Melting, boiling, freezing, condensing and subliming.
What happens to the particles of a solid when heated?
The particles start to have less energy and the forces start to weaken which lets the particles break free from their positions.
What physical change that involves a solid turning into liquID?
The physical change is called melting.
What is the physical change that involves a liquid turning into a gas?
The physical change is boiling.
What is the physical change that involve a liquid turning into a solid?
The physical change is freezing.
What is the physical change that involves a solid turning into gas?
The physical change is subliming.
What is the physical change that involves a gas turning into liquid?
The physical change is condensing.
What happens to the density of gas when it condenses into a liquid?
The density of gas increases. They particles start to get closer and closer, so it becomes more dense.
What happens to the density of liquid when it freezes into a solid?
Although, the density of liquid is dense it will become more dense when it freezes. The particles start to get closer and form a straight line, and the particles will only be able to vibrate.
What temperature does pure water melt at?
Pure water melts at 100ºc.
What temperature does pure ice melt a?
Pure ice melts at 0ºc.
