Solids, Liquids and Gases Flashcards
What is the change of state when a substance is condensing?
A gas changes into a liquid.
What is Diffusion?
Diffusion is when particles of a substance move from an area where there are lots of them to an area where there are fewer. Imagine spraying perfume: at first, it’s strong near the bottle, but then the scent spreads out all over the room.
Why do substances expand?
When you heat a substance, its particles start moving faster. They bump into each other more and push each other further apart. This makes the substance take up more space, so it expands. Think of it like a crowded room – if everyone starts running around, they’ll need more space!
What can be separated by Distillation?
Liquids with different boiling points.
What are the properties of the particles in a gas?
Tiny, fast-moving, and spread ou
What can a substance do if it is said to be ‘soluble’?
It can dissolve.
What must a substance gain in order to change state from solid to liquid?
Heat.
What is ‘Melting’?
A solid turning into a liquid
How would you separate an insoluble solid from a liquid?
You would use filtration. This means pouring the mixture through a filter paper, which is like a very fine sieve. The liquid can pass through the tiny holes in the paper, but the solid particles are too big and get stuck, so they stay behind. Think of it like using a strainer in the kitchen to separate pasta from the water
Describe Evaporation.
Evaporation is when a liquid changes into a gas. This usually happens at the surface of the liquid. It can happen at any temperature, but it happens faster when the liquid is warmer. Think of a puddle drying up after it rains – the water is evaporating and turning into water vapor, which is a gas, and then it goes into the air.
