Energy Flashcards
Name the 3 Fossil Fuels
Coal, oil, and natural gas.
How many Joules is one kiloJoule?
One kiloJoule is 1,000 Joules. “Kilo” means one thousand.
What is the Principle of Conservation of Energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred from one form to another.
It’s like saying you can’t make energy appear out of nowhere, and you can’t make it disappear either.
Which energy store is decreasing as the parachutist falls?
Gravitational potential energy. As they fall, they’re getting closer to the ground, so their stored energy due to height is decreasing.
Define ‘Efficiency’
Efficiency is how much of the energy put into a system is usefully transferred.
It’s about how little energy is wasted.
Describe the environmental effects of burning fossil fuels
Burning fossil fuels releases gases that pollute the air and contribute to climate change (global warming).
What is Acid Rain?
Acid rain is rain that is more acidic than normal because of pollution from burning fossil fuels. It can damage trees and buildings.
What does ‘Dissipated’ mean?
Dissipated means energy that is wasted, usually as heat, and spread out into the surroundings.
It’s no longer useful
Describe what is meant by a ‘renewable resources’?
Renewable resources are things that can be replenished naturally, like solar, wind, and hydro power.
They won’t run out
What is the energy store of the turbines in a power station?
Kinetic energy (energy of motion).
The turbines spin around.
