Cells Flashcards
What is the function of the Cell Membrane?
The cell membrane is like the cell’s skin.
It controls what goes in and out of the cell.
Which part of a cell contains the DNA?
The nucleus.
Describe a ciliated cell. Describe the functions of ciliated cells.
Ciliated cells have tiny hairs called cilia.
They move back and forth, like little oars, to push mucus (a sticky liquid) and other things along, like in your lungs or windpipe.
Describe the adaptation of a root hair cell that means it can absorb more water
Root hair cells have a long, thin shape, which gives them a large surface area. This means they can absorb more water and minerals from the soil.
Describe how white blood cells protect us from disease
White blood cells are like the body’s soldiers.
Some white blood cells engulf and destroy pathogens (disease-causing germs). Others make antibodies, which are special proteins that attack specific pathogens.
What are ‘pathogens’?
Pathogens are things that can make you sick, like bacteria, viruses, and fungi.
How do you calculate the magnification of a microscope?
You multiply the magnification of the eyepiece lens by the magnification of the objective lens.
What is meant by the ‘resolution’ of a microscope?
Resolution is how clear the image looks. A higher resolution means you can see more detail. It’s about how well the microscope can distinguish between two very close points.
Describe the difference between a plant cell and an animal cell
Plant cells have a cell wall (for support), chloroplasts (for photosynthesis), and usually a large vacuole.
Animal cells don’t have these.
What is a ‘tissue’ made from?
A tissue is made from a group of similar cells that all work together to do a specific job, like muscle tissue or nerve tissue
