Water pollution
Air containmation
Solid state waste management effects on human
Risk of water borne diseases. Respiratory diseases.
Steps involved in SWM
1: waste generation
2: mode of collection
3: transportation
4: segeration
5: application of disposal techniques: a sanitary landfills, incineration, composting.
6: monitoring and evaluation.
Sanitary landfills
It is a method in which grabbage is spread out in thin layers, compacted and covered with clay or plastic foam.
Wells are drilled near landfills sites to monitor if any leakage.
Types of landfills
Trench method
Area method: waste deposited in layers over available area
Cell method : deposition within preconstructed boundaries.
Advantages of sanitary landfills
Economical
No segeration is required
Can convert marshy bareen land into landfills sites
Disadvantages of sanitary landfills
Pollution for local community
Containmation of water
Incineration method of solid waste management
Solid waste is subjected to combustion so as to convert it into residue.
Advantages of incneration
Residue: cement formation
Little space required
Cost of transportation
Disadvantages of incernation
High capital required, high operational cost,.. smoke dust,
Composing
Biological process in which microorganisms convert organic waste into humus. Finished product is high in nitrogen used as organic fertilizer.
Advantages of composing
Excellent for plant growth
Disadvantages of composting
Required overseeing
Time taken process.
