What is the procedure for testing steering prior to departure?
- notify the bridge
- visual inspection of steering gear, leaks levels obstructions.
- check over the side and ensure rudders are clear. No divers swimmers, obstructions.
- contact the bridge using the fixed coms system.
- Ask for Pump 1 to be started.
- Hard over in one direction and then the other
- Check local and remote indications agree
- Check same test from each steering station.
- Trip pump 1 and check that power alarms locally and on the bridge.
- Ask for pump 2 to be started
- Hard over in one direction and then the other
- Check local and remote indications agree
- Check same test from each steering station.
- Trip pump 2 and check that power alarms locally and on the bridge.
- Reset and start both pumps.
- Now ready for departure,
- pumps to be run until departure, otherwise test to be redone.
How long prior to departures must you check your sterring?
No More than 12 hours
What must the steering gear be capable of?
-Putting the rudder from 35° to 35°
-Main Steering gear must be capable of turning the rudder from 35° to 30° at full speed and max draft within 28 seconds
-Aux steering gear must be capable of turning the rudder from 15° to 15°at half speed or 7 knots, at max draft in 60 seconds
How often must emergency steering gear be tested and by whom?
Emergency steering gear must be tested every 3 months with a drill or exercise with the persons who steer the ship and those that operate the steering gear
