What is the procedure for testing steering prior to departure?

A
  • notify the bridge
  • visual inspection of steering gear, leaks levels obstructions.
  • check over the side and ensure rudders are clear. No divers swimmers, obstructions.
  • contact the bridge using the fixed coms system.
  • Ask for Pump 1 to be started.
    • Hard over in one direction and then the other
    • Check local and remote indications agree
    • Check same test from each steering station.
    • Trip pump 1 and check that power alarms locally and on the bridge.
  • Ask for pump 2 to be started
    • Hard over in one direction and then the other
    • Check local and remote indications agree
    • Check same test from each steering station.
    • Trip pump 2 and check that power alarms locally and on the bridge.
  • Reset and start both pumps.
  • Now ready for departure,
    • pumps to be run until departure, otherwise test to be redone.
