Solar system Flashcards
Nebula
*a cloud of gas and dust in outer space, visible in the night sky either as an indistinct bright patch or as a dark silhouette against other luminous matter.
Solar Nebula
*Our solar system began forming within a concentration of interstellar dust and hydrogen gas called a molecular cloud.
Nuclear Fusion
*a nuclear reaction in which atomic nuclei of low atomic number fuse to form a heavier nucleus with the release of energy.
Sunspot
*a spot or patch appearing from time to time on the sun’s surface, appearing dark by contrast with its surroundings.
Terrestrial Planets
One of the highest dense planets nearest to to sun; Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Earth
Prograde Rotation
the counter-clockwise spin of a planet or moon as seen from above the planet’s North Pole; rotation in the same direction as the sun’s rotation
Retrograde Rotation
the clockwise spin of a planet or moon as seen from above the planet’ North Pole
Gas Giant
a planet that has a deep, massive atmosphere, such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or Neptune
Satellite
a natural or artificial body that revolves around a planet
New Moon
*is the first lunar phase, when the Moon and Sun have the same ecliptic longitude. At this phase, the lunar disk is not visible to the unaided eye, except when silhouetted during a solar eclipse. Daylight outshines the earthlight that dimly illuminates the dark side of the new Moon.
Waxing Crescent
*The moon is less than one-half illuminated by the sun but less than one quarter illuminated. Occurs when the moon’s illumination is increasing, First Quarter. The moon is one-half illuminated by the sun.
1st Quarter Moon
*is a primary Moon phase when we can see exactly half of the Moon’s surface illuminated. If it is the left or right half, depends on where you are on Earth. This First Quarter Moon is in the Northern Hemisphere and mirrors approximately the calendar symbol.
Waxing Gibbous
*means that it is getting bigger.
Full Moon
*is the most spectacular Moon phase when the entire face of the Moon is lit up. The Full Moon. When the side of the Moon we can see from Earth is fully lit up at Full Moon, the opposite side is in darkness, and vice versa at New Moon
Waning Gibbous
*means that its getting smaller.
