Minerals Flashcards
Mineral
a solid inorganic substance of natural occurrence.
Rock
Rock or stone is a natural substance, a solid aggregate of one or more minerals or mineralogists.
Element
a part or aspect of something abstract, especially one that is essential or characteristic.
Compound
a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements; a mixture
Crystal
is a solid material whose constituents (such as atoms, molecules, or ions) are arranged in a highly ordered microscopic structure, forming a crystal lattice that extends in all directions.
Color
is the characteristic of human visual perception described through color categories, with names such as red, orange, yellow, green, blue, or purple.
Luster
a gentle sheen or soft glow, especially that of a partly reflective surface.
Streak
a long, thin line or mark of a different substance or color from its surroundings.
Cleavage
a sharp division; a split
Fracture
the cracking or breaking of a hard object or material
Density
the degree of compactness of a substance.
Ore
a naturally occurring solid material from which a metal or valuable mineral can be profitably extracted.
Metallic minerals

Non-metallic minerals

Gemstones
a precious or semiprecious stone, especially one cut, polished, and used in a piece of jewelry.
Igneous rock
is one of the three main rock types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic. Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava.
Sedimentary rock
is formed in four main ways: by the deposition of the weathered remains of other rocks (known as ‘clastic’ sedimentary rocks); by the accumulation and the consolidation of sediments
Metamorphic rock
is a result of a transformation of a pre-existing rock. The original rock is subjected to very high heat and pressure, which cause obvious physical and/or chemical changes.
