Solar system Flashcards
Orientation of the 8 major planets and sun.
Sun Mercury Venus Earth Mars Jupiter Saturn Uranus Neptune
Terrestrial (inner) planets
Much closer to sun than Jovian planets. Have volcanic activity. Rock like
Jovian (outer) planets
Further from sun. Very large. Made up mostly of drozen gas-like material.
Sun
78% hydrogen, 20% helium. Pressure of 27 million degrees f.
Converts 4.4 million tons of matter into energy every second.
Kuiper Belt
Where Sedna and Erie were found. Doesn’t orbit the sun therefore isn’t considered planet.
Extraterrestrial impacts
May have started life on earth. Can change climate. Can start fire and consume oxygen and vegetation. Could have aided in water supply.
Mars having life
Meteorites from mars contained organic material. Suggests life could have been around for millions of years.
Solar system theory must explain…..
How it was created. Mechanics of solar system.
Chemical condensation nebular theory
Makes sense since closest planets are rocky and dense (terrestrial) and distant planets are gas like in structure.
Black hole
Light cannot escape
White hole
Matter and light can escape
Worm hole
Allows transport to other parts to universe
