Soil Conservation Flashcards
the process when soil particles are detached from their original location, transported and deposited in a different location
Soil Erosion
Wearing away of the land surface primarily as a result of human activities or in some cases animal activities, much faster rate than geological erosion. Plowing, cutting, grazing, construction.
Accelerated erosion
Key drivers of erosion
Wind and water, topography
Response to Dust Bowl, planted trees to shelter wind. Windbreaks. One to five rows of trees planted on the western margin of a farm in a north-south line.
Shelterbelt Program 1935
Erosion control practices
Contour farming Strip Cropping Terracing Gully Reclamation Conservation Tillage
The mending of a gully by either physical methods (damns, boulders, cement) or vegetational means (shrubs)
Gully reclamation
Amount of topsoil losses during the year that is tolerable to the USDA, Average 4.7 tons per acre.
Tolerance Value
Factors that affect soil erosion
Rainfall
Runoff
Water Soluble Aggregates
plowing, seeding, cultivating and harvesting at right angles to the direction of the slope rather than up and down
Contour Farming
Growing crops that require different types of tillage such as row crop and cover crop, alternating strips
Strip Cropping
Steep slopes are converted into a series of broad based steps, runoff is retarded, soil erosion is arrested.
Terracing
the practice of restricting plowing of the soil to reduce the erosion and leave enough of the previous crop residues so at least 30% of the soil surface is covered when the next crop is planted.
