LESSONS FROM ECOLOGY Flashcards
The individuals of a species occurring in a given area
Population
All species living in a given area, oak woods, field, cattail marsh.
Community
a system, or a group of interconnected elements, formed by the interaction of a community of organisms with their environment, two interactive components living (biotic) and nonliving (abiotic)
Ecosystem
The flow of nutrients and energy from one organism to another by means of a series of eating processes.
Food Chain
An interconnected series of food chains.
Food Web
Biomass is dry weight of living organisms-Only 5-20% of biomass and energy in a given trophic level is transferred to the next level. Primary consumers receive most biomass (insect), secondary (fish) and third (human) receive only receive 10% of the previous consumer through heat loss.
BIOMASS PYRAMID
The circular flow of an element from the non-living (abiotic) environment such as rocks, air, and water into the bodies of living organisms and then back into the nonliving environment once again.
NUTRIENT CYCLES
Principle that organisms can live within a range of tolerance, and when conditions exceed that range, the organisms are unable to survive. Survival depends on water, temperature, oxygen, and nutrients, do not remain constant.
Law of Tolerance
The immediate environment in which an organism lives. Includes such components as food, cover, shelter, water, and breeding sites. Its address.
HABITAT
An organisms functional role, what it does, and what its relationship is to its food and its enemies.
NICHE
The number of organisms an ecosystem can support, and how many of each species the system can provide for. Determined by food supply, nesting sites, water supplies, climatic conditions, waste assimilation.
