SOG Flashcards
Why do we shut the Novell network down once a day
In order to maintain time synchronization with the city network so that we know at 7 AM people can begin to book Lieu days
What are the benefits of on scene times
It improves firefighter safety
It provides an air management tool
When the “push to talk button” is depressed according to radio operations manual SOG 2–3 what does the “bonk” sound indicate
• System is busy • System is down • Out of range o Move 15ft o 90 degrees o Close to window
If the push to talk button is pushed in no sound is heard what does that indicate?
The radio is in talk around mode
When swapping out a portable radio why is it important to notify communications ASAP
• If the orange emergency button is pressed we want to know where & who that portable is assigned too
According to CAD move ups SOG 2-04 what is the DC to notify communications of at the beginning of shift
- Apparatus out of service
- Scheduled maintenance
- Schedule training
CAD move ups SOG 2–04 what are the criteria is for automatic move up?
- The IC does not release other responding units
- A working fire
- Out of service vehicles returning
- Out of service vehicles training
- A number of calls on the fire
- VSA protocol
In regards to incident command terminology SOG 3–05 describe the zones
HOT ZONE • Determined by the incident commander or hazmat sector Officer • IDLH –Immediately Dangerous to Life & Health • Proper training Required • Wear PPE & SCBA • Minimum # of people in that area WARM ZONE • Required PPE but not SCBA • Area is reasonably safe COLD ZONE • Requires no PPE • Safe zone
Define Incident Action Plan SOG 3-05
A strategic plan developed by: • Evaluating conditions. • Developing tactical approaches. • Identifying available resources. • Preparing assignments. It is based on three tactical priorities: • life safety • Incident stabilization • Prevention of further loss and preservation of property
The size up and information collected shall be used to develop and incident action plan.
This shall reflect tactical priorities of the fire ground bearing in mind Hazard risk assessment and or Risk vs reward evaluation.
The plan must be
- Communicated with clear objectives
- Allow for flexibility
- Constantly evaluated
- Updated
Define strategy SOG 3-05
Management of offense/defense decision by the incident commander this critical decision: • regulates operational control • establishes objectives • set priorities • allocates resources
Define Offensive attack
SOG 3-05
And attack with related support to quickly bring the situation under control
Define Defensive attack
SOG 3-05
- Exterior attack
- stopping the forward progress of the fire
- protecting exposures and providing fire control
Define Marginal SOG 3-05
• A high-risk situation within an offense strategy with the main objective being rescue once complete FF removal

- Level 2 staging is for large incidence
- The first truck a level 2 staging is the staging officer
- All apparatus to check in with staging officer
What is the difference between a full PAR & a partial PAR?
A partial PAR is only accounting for the people in the hot zone
A full par accounts for everyone at the scene
When is a RIT not required
Defensive operations
You don`t need one for each sector
What is the difference between level 1 level 2 and level 3 RIT
Level 1 is initial set up • Gathering information • Starting a RIT worksheet • Staging equipment • Discussing the situation with IC • 360 • Familiarize with structure • Locate second means of egress

- What is being requested
- Who is the request are
- Why is it being requested
When should the IC establish occupants support?
• At all structure fires
What are the IC considerations for talk around? (5
- Ensure All on scene must be on “talk around”
- To be used if all other attempts to transmit fail
- IC must keep one radio on the trunk system and the other on talk around
- If you leave the vehicle you need two radios
- The orange button will not work
What is the use of the interior and outer zones and explosive device emergency?
• Inner zone o 100 m radius around the device o for EDU you personnel only • Outters Zone o 300 m for first responders • IC to maintain communication link with police
What is lightweight construction?
• Structural systems that are fabricated from components that have substantially less mass than traditional construction methods used for equivalent applications
What is the failure rate for lightweight construction?
• As little as 4 minutes
What are the significant dates of light weight construction in our community?
- Truss is became popular after 1970
- Engineered flooring first came to Brampton in 1985

- Rapid failure in less than four minutes
- Notify all personnel on scene ( consider emergency alerting tones)
- Consider using ladders to access upper floors
• After 1970 assume engineered truss
• After 1990 assume engineered floors
• 1985 engineered floors 1st came to construction in Brampton
Before you place a crew on the roof what is part of your Hazard risk analysis as the IC
• Do a Hazard risk analysis o Type of roof construction o Location of the fire o Length of time structure has been burning o Location of HVAC units
As IC you need to put a crew on the roof what are your considerations? (9)
(practical)
• Provide alternate means of escape • Do a Hazard risk analysis o Type of roof construction o Location of the fire o Length of time structure has been burning o Location of HVAC units • Appropriate PPE and equipment • Keep the number to a minimum • Cognizant of wind direction • Precaution of falling through or off • Coordinate with interior crews • Avoid cutting holes • Once OPS end, exit promptly
What are your concerns as I C with cutting holes in the roof for ventilation SOG 3-21?
• Holes on steel commercial roofs with widely spaced truss have the potential to sag and personal fall into the hole
Who should you notify if you’re using large quantities of F500?
Region of Peel spills Coordinator
What are your concerns as IC at a fire with all the run off contaminants and F500 SOG 3-22?
• To protect contaminated runoff from entering the storm systems and waterways
