Soft Tissues of the Thorax and Respiratory Passageway # 2 Flashcards
lungs
1
Q
What do healthy lungs look like?
A
- soft
- spongy
- porous
- elastic
- pink
2
Q
What are the main structures of the lungs
(8 items)
A
- Apex
- Right and Left lungs
- Mediastinum
- Mediastinal surface
- Costal surface
- Oblique fissures
- Transverse fissure
- Pleurae
3
Q
How many lobes does the right lung have?
A
- three
4
Q
How many lobes does the left lung have?
A
- two
5
Q
Where is the Mediastinum?
A
- Space that separates the two lungs
- Houses the heart, large vessels, esophagus, some nerves, and part of the branching bronchi
6
Q
Where is the Mediastinal surface?
A
- Surface of each lung facing the mediastinum
7
Q
Where is the Costal surface?
A
- Convex surface of lung next to ribs
8
Q
What type of fissure is in both lungs?
A
- Oblique fissures
-They travel in a superolateral direction
9
Q
What type of fissure is in only one lung? Which lung?
A
- Transverse fissure
- Right lung
10
Q
What are Pleurae?
A
Coverings for the lungs and internal organs
11
Q
Visceral pleurae
A
Covering lungs
12
Q
Parietal pleurae
A
Cover thoracic linings
13
Q
What are 3 types of parietal pleurae?
A
- Mediastinal pleura (covering mediastinum)
- Diaphragmatic pleura (covering diaphragm)
- Costal pleurae (covering inner surface of rib cage)
14
Q
Describe Pleural Linkage
A
- Two layers of the pleurae (Visceral and Parietal) adhere to each other and are airtight.
- Allows expansion during breathing
- Mucous solution is released between the parietal and visceral pleurae
15
Q
What is the function of the mucous solution between the pleurae?
A
- Reduces surface tension
- Provides a slippery interface between the lungs and thoracic wall
- Keeps the sheets from clinging to each other
