Muscles of Expiration Flashcards
What do the muscles of expiration do?
- Help pull down (depress) the rib cage
- Help pull up on the abdomen to contract the thoracic cavity, causing the lungs to contract in size
The muscles of expiration can be categorized into 3 groups. What are they?
- Muscles of Thorax and Back
- Abdominal Muscles of Expiration
- Muscles of Upper Limb
What are the muscles of expiration of the Thorax and Back?
Anterior-Lateral =
- Internal intercostal (interosseous (boney) portion)
- Transversus thoracic
Posterior Thoracic Muscles =
- Subcostals
- Serratus Posterior Inferior
Where are the internal intercostal (interosseous portion) located? What do they do?
- Between the bony portion of the ribs.
- Depress ribs
Diagrams for muscles
A - Internal Intercostals
B - Serratus Posterior Inferior Muscle
C - Transversus Thoracic Muscles
D - Subcostals
What are the Abdominal Muscles of Expiration?
- Anterolateral:
- A. Transversus abdominis
- B. Internal oblique
- C. External oblique
- D. Rectus abdominis
- Posterior
- E. Quadratus lumborum
What is the abdominal aponeurosis?
- A tendonous structure that provides an attachment point for many muscles of the abdomen
What is the Linea Alba?
- The main part of the abdominal aponeurosis
- White line the runs from the xiphoid process to the pubic symphysis
- Forms a midline structure for muscle attachment
Which muscles compress the abdomen, and do nothing else that we need to know for the test? (HAHAHAHA 😂 Good one, Lisa)
- Transversus abdominis
- Rectus abdominis
Which muscles rotate the trunk and compress the abdomen?
- Internal oblique
- External oblique
What does the Quadratus Lumborum do?
- Pulls the last rib down and supports in abdominal compression from the back
What muscle of the upper limb helps with expiration?
- Latissimus dorsi
What does the latissimus dorsi do?
- Compresses the lower portion of the rib cage wall
