Soft TIssue Injury Flashcards
What is turf toe? WHat is the treatment?
Turf toe is a sprain or capsule inflammation of the MP joint of the great toe. It will be painful when they bend the toe up.
the treatment is just rest.
WHere do Morton’s neuromas usually form? WHat causes it?
between the 3rd and 4th toe
wearing shows that are too tight
What is plantar fasciitis? WHat will the symptoms be?
It’s inflammation and microtears of hte plantar fascia, which runs from the heel to the toes.
It usually hurts most at the insertion site on the heel.
Usually worse right away in the mornign when they step out of bed
What are the treatments for plantar fasciitis?
put a heel cup in the shoe to rest the area
if caused by pes planus (flat arches), get inserts
wear posterior cock-up splints at night
steroid shots or surgery very uncommon
stay hydrated and stretch the area.
What is the layman’s term for plantar fasciitis?
heel spur
although this has nothing to do with it
Why are achilles tendon tears more common in middle aged and older individuals?
because the tendon has elastin in it and the sulfhydryl groups in the elastin begin to cross link as we age, thus, the elastin doesn’t stretch as easily and it can tear
Which achilles tendon ruptures will heal better, distal or proximal?
proximal - the ones involving the muscle will heal better
What are the Ottawa rules used for?
determining whether to x-ray a likely ankle sprain
What are the Ottawa rules?
x-ray if…
they can’t bear weight for more than 4 steps
pain over medial maleolus or distal tibia
pain over lateral malleolus or distal fibula
pain over 5ith MP joint
pain over navicular bone
Which ligament is most commonly sprained in an inversion ankle sprain?
the anterior talofibular ligament
What causea a syndesmotic sprain?
forced dorsiflexion of the foot.
you get a syndesmotic tear of the talofibular ligament, which can go all the way up the leg and sometimes fracture the fibula
this will require surgery
Which three muscles insert into the pes anserinus, covering the bursa involved in pes anserine burisits?
sartorius
gracilis
semitendinosus
What is osgood schlatter’s disease?
jumper’s knee
a tibial tubercle apophyseal traction injury
Why should you ask someone with knee pain how quickly it swelled up?
more serious sprains will swell immediately
less severe injuries won’t appear swollen for a few days later
Which muscle atrophies quickly in the knee with dissues, suggesting injury?
the vastus medilis obliquus
