Soft Tissue Extremities Flashcards
What is an abrasion?
An area damaged by scraping or wearing away.
Characteristics include superficial damage, minimal bleeding, and typically no scarring.
What is a laceration?
A deep cut or tear in the skin or flesh.
Characteristics include irregular edges and a high risk of contamination.
What is a puncture/penetration injury?
Penetration of the skin by a pointed object.
It may cause significant internal damage and has a high risk of infection.
What is an avulsion?
The act of pulling or tearing away of tissue.
It typically causes moderate to severe bleeding.
What is an amputation?
An open injury caused by cutting or tearing away a limb, body part, or organ.
It can lead to massive bleeding requiring immediate intervention.
What are the 5 P’s of injury assessment?
Pain, Pallor, Pulse, Paresthesia, Paralysis.
Each P assesses different aspects of the injury.
What should be assessed in bleeding assessment?
Location, Size, Color, Controlled/Uncontrolled status, Clotting/Medication History, and Blood Loss.
Each factor helps determine the severity of the bleeding.
What is the procedure for dealing with impaled objects?
Stabilize the object, do not remove unless obstructing the airway, and treat the wound around the object.
What are the treatment guidelines for amputations?
Apply direct pressure to control bleeding and preserve amputated parts in a moist, sterile dressing on ice.
What is a dislocation?
Injury caused when the normal position of a joint is disturbed.
Common sites include the shoulder and fingers.
What is a fracture?
The cracking or breaking of a hard object or material.
Types include simple (closed) and compound (open) fractures.
What are the treatment steps for extremity injuries?
Control bleeding, immobilize fractures or dislocations, elevate the limb, consider splinting, and monitor distal circulation.
