Sodium channel blocker OD replacement of elemental sodium. Increase extracellular sodium concentration to overcome sodium channel blockade
Increased rate of depolarization of pacemaker and non pacemaker cells to return to sinus pacing
Sodium Bicarbonate Onset/ duration
Onset- immediate
Duration 1-2 hours
Sodium Bicarbonate indications
Sodium channel blocker overdose with wide QRS > .10
Aspirin Overdose
Cardiac Arrest with known or suspected hyperkalemia
Crush Syndrome
Prior to intubation of suspected DKA
Sodium Bicarbonate contraindications
Hypersensitivity to medication
