sodium and water balance Flashcards
1
Q
Problems with Na/H2O commonly present as?
A
A change in Na concenration
2
Q
What is the commonest biochemical abnormality?
A
Hyponatraemia.
3
Q
Why is there rarely any clinical effect of hyponatreamia caused by too much water?
A
water gain affects every body compartment and because the total body volume of water is 3X that of ECF - diluted effect which will impact minimally.
4
Q
What is sodium controlled by?
A
Mineralcorticoid activity.(the exhange of K+/H+ ions for Na+ retention)
5
Q
What is the main steroid with mineralcorticoid activity?
A
Aldosterone.
6
Q
What is water controlled by?
A
ADH
