Sociology Of News Flashcards
Michael Schudson on approaches to sociology of news, 2005
The gatekeeper theory, the idea that the editor chooses news pieces based on personal biases, but Schudson says that it is limited as it only looks at one small part of the news making process - David Manning White’s study of an editor found that only 18 out of 423 pieces were rejected due to personal biases or beliefs
Pamela Shoemaker and Stephen D. Reese on the media sociology perspective, 2014
When newspapers are owned by larger organisations then the journalist’s freedom to report on so deity objectively may be hindered, individuality if journalism may be lost due to business-related influences
Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky on the propaganda model of the mass media, 1988
Banks and other investment companies often own media companies and so the news is often influenced by profit motivations - in the early 1980s, investment institutions owned 44% of the stock of publicly owned newspapers
