Sports sociologist are concern with the study of human behavior and social interactions within particular contexts

Two controversial issues in todays culture is gender and religion, two overcome this we have broken down barriers where women sport are gaining in popularly, and on sport team they have team of people from multiple religions
What are the social institutions we have in relation to sport?
- Family (The social institution of a family, depending on the degree of support and encouragement offered, has the potential to be a socializing agent for children’s participation)
- Education (Sports show many positive values and opportunities for students, but we must cexamine the extent to which the value of sports is placed above the value of education)
- Media (Sports have become a form of entertainment for some rather than being an activity characterized by enjoyment, fun, and challenge)
- Politics (countries use sports to enhance their image and power or that of their leaders but sports have also been used as peacemakers)
- Religion (Religion and sport have a strong relationship
- Churches sponsor leagues but athletes themselves profess and promote religious beliefs)
- Economy (Budgets for advertising and sponsorship- may spend millions of dollars)\
What is def of Structural Functionalism?
maintains that sports are an inspiration in our society and that a systems approach is the best way to study society, assumes that societies tend toward equilibrium and balance and that sport contributes to this balance
What is the def of Conflict Theory ?
envisions sports as an opiate of society, meaning that it deadens our awareness to social issues. Within this theory, society is not viewed as a stable system held together by common beliefs and values like structural functionalism, rather society is a changing set of relationships based on economics

The feminist theories have taken a critical approach that emphasizes gender as a category of experience and sports as sites for producing, reproducing and transforming ideas about gender and the structure of gender relations in society
What is the def of Symbolic Interactionism?
Explains that we as athletes behave according to the manner in which we envision the effect of our behavior on ourselves and others and thus develop a sense of who we are
What is the importance of title IX?
a law was enacted to help prevent gender discrimination in the United States educational athletic system. This law, known commonly as Title IX, gives each gender equal rights to educational programs, activities, and federal financial assistance
