Socialisation and social solidarity: Durkheim
- meets a pre request of society by passing on the cultural and values of society.
- This is achieved through the hidden curriculum and PHSE lessons.
- This helps build social solidarity as it teaches students core values
Bridge between family and wider society: Parsons
believes that schools provide a bridge between the family and the wider society which allows students to move to their ascribe status and the particularistic values at home to the meritocratic and universalistic values of wider society.
Role allocation: Davis and Moore
provides a means of selecting and shifting people into social hierarchy in a meritocratic society access to jobs and power, wealth and status are directly linked to educational achievement.
Developing human capital: Schutz
- suggests that the investment in education benefits wider society
- education provides a trained and qualified workforce
- education makes sure that the most skilled jobs go to the most qualified people
