Self is a product of social interaction
Three Stages of Development:
1. Preparatory - child dependent on social interaction as imitation
2. Play - roleplays widens the child’s perspectives; he is not alone
3. Game - respond to multiple social relationships
Generalized others - cultural norms, laws, beliefs and values as basis for self evaluation
Two parts of the self:
Self-image - perception of self from others’ perspective
Self-awareness - acknowledgment of other’s role towards self

I - how I see myself
Me - how I see myself from others’ perspective

Formation of self is a learned response to social stimuli
Behaviors and attitude dveeloped in response to reinforcement
Self-efficacy - people’s belief in their capability to exercise control over their own functioning and environmental events
Karl Marx / Theory of Self-Estrangement or Self-Alienation
Alienation happens when someone is forced to work
