What is culture?
The beliefs and practices of groups of people and the way they do things.
What is cultural identity?
The characteristics of a group of people that encompasses place of birth, religion, language, cuisine, etc,.
What factors influence culture?
Language, customs, values, norms, mores, rules, tools, technologies, products, organizations, and institutions. Historical, geographical, and familial factors can affect assessment and intervention processes.
What are specific counseling approaches?
Humanistic, cognitive, behavioral, psychoanalytic, constructionist and systemic.
What is microaggressions?
Commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, and environmental slights that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative attitudes toward stigmatized or culturally marginalized groups.
What is macroaggression?
An act of racism towards everyone of a race, gender or group.
What is ETIC?
It is the external constructs of a culture.
What is EMIC?
It is the internal construct of an individual culturally.
What are key cultural group categories?
National Society; Organizational Culture; Social Identity Group Culture; Team Culture; and Individual Culture.
What are ESTs?
Empirically Supported Treatments - treatments proven effective for specific disorders.
What are ESRs?
Empirically Supported Relationships - cultivating a therapeutic relationship while using supported interventions.
What are EBPs?
Evidence-Based Practice - using research with clinical expertise in context of the client’s needs.
What is colorism?
The practice of preferring those of a lighter skin color within groups of people of the same race or ethnic group.
What is ethnicity?
The identification of a group based on perceived cultural distinctiveness that makes the group into a “people.
What is Socioeconomic status (SES)?
An individual or group’s social standing or class. Often based on education, income, and occupation.
What is sex and gender?
Sex is assigned at birth based on anatomy and gender is how one identifies as a person.
What is sexual orientation?
A person’s identity in relation to the gender or genders to which they are sexually attracted.
What is spirituality?
A broad concept of a belief in something beyond the self.
What is disability?
Any condition of the body or mind that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities and interact with the world around them.
What is social justice?
The view that everyone deserves equal economic, political, and social rights and opportunities.
What is privilege?
Refers to certain social advantages, benefits or degrees of prestige and respect that an individual has by virtue of belonging to certain social classes
What is oppression?
When one person exercises authority or power in an unfair, abusive, cruel, or needlessly controlling way.
What is prejudice?
An attitude toward someone simply based on that person’s membership to a particular group.
What is racism?
Negative reactions to others based on negative stereotypes and racial discrimination.
What is resiliency?
The process of adapting well in the face of adversity, trauma, tragedy, threats, or significant sources of stress.
