What is soft law?
Law that governs and regulates human behaviour in other sociological contexts. This may not be official law - in the sense of law passed in a Statute - but they nevertheless function to govern human behaviour.
According to Cottrell, why is a sociological understanding of law essential?
Sociological inquiry is necessary to understand the social or historical processes the shape law.
Legal ideas are ultimately a means of structuring the social world. To appreciate them in this sense and to recognize their power and their limits is to understand them sociologically
