Familiarity: You may play the same sport as your family
Attitudes: You may not play badminton because your friends don’t play ( this could be flipped and encourage you to play as your friends play)
Family commitments: you may not play sport because you have to look after your siblings

What effect does age have on participation
Accessibility: Many clubs have specific times in which they train/play
- they also have set age ranges
Disposable income: Money may be needed to pay bills rather than play sport
Available leisure time: Some people have little spare time due to work commitments ( usually the older you are)
stereotyping: Some people think you are too old to play sport if you are retired

Media coverage: Lack of TV coverage of female sports
Sexism: Some girls do not want to play rugby as they think others will think they are masculine
Stereotyping: Some males do not want to play netball as they think it is a sport for females

Cultural influences: family or peers influence whether someone does an activity or not
Disposable income: Due to economic grouping some people from minority groups may have less money
- without a permanent job you won’t be able to access the funds to play sports
Stereotyping: people from different backgrounds are steered towards or away from certain activities

People are split into groups dependent on their disability
What effect does Disability have on partcipation
Adaptability: many adapted activities for people with disabilities
- adaptations of sports for disabled people can be expensive
Inclusiveness: sports sessions may not cater for disabilities. This means disabled people can’t take part in mainstream activities
Accessibility: Lack of clubs and facilities in the local area for disabled people
- lack of ramps
- pool hoists
Disposable income: specialists equipment is expensive
Stereotyping: Someone with disabilities may be of they view they can’t take part in sports
Media coverage: limited media coverage of Disabled sportsmen
Role models: Due to the lack of media coverage there is lack of disabled role models to aspire to
